How to change the QT icon.

The default QuoteTracker icon is 32x32 (24 bit), so it is suggested to use icons of this size to avoid potential problems. Also, copy the icon file you plan to use into the QuoteTracker folder.

With QuoteTracker not running:
Using Notepad, in the [STOCKS] section of STOCKS.INI file, add a line:

MainIcon=filename.ico

Where filename is the name of the ico (icon) file to use. A path is not necessary since you've copied the icon file into the QuoteTracker folder. (You did do that, right?) Close notepad, saving the STOCKS.INI file in the process.

Now, if you are running multiple instances of QuoteTracker, you can also do this for each separate instance. The result, assuming you use a different icon for each instance, would be a different icon displayed in the taskbar/tray for each instance.

FAQ MENU

Multiple use of your registration key.

Your registration key will work three times within a year. If you already used the registration code three times (reinstalls, new computer, etc.) and it gets rejected, all you need to do is contact support at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and request that your key count be adjusted. You will need to provide your name and email address that you initially registered with.

FAQ MENU

Displaying an image from a webpage in your message.

Note: You cannot just use the URL that points to the page containing the image. You also cannot link to images on sites that prohibit "hotlinking".

1. Go to the page containing the image you want to display in your message and right click the image, then select properties to see the URL for the image itself. Highlight the URL there, right click it and select copy.

2. When composing your message, click the "Image" link, paste the URL into the popup box and then click OK.

After you post your message, the actual image will be shown and not just the URL to it.

FAQ MENU

 Ameritrade/DATEK - Convert to "Ameritrade & IZone"

If you are using QuoteTracker integrated trading with your Ameritrade account and have "Ameritrade/DATEK" configuration selected for the trading broker, you will need to change it to the "Ameritrade & IZone" configuration. The "Ameritrade/DATEK" configuration is going to be removed soon. The "Ameritrade & IZone" configuration has all the features of the old one, and then some.

Instructions can be found at:
http://www.quotetracker.com/help/AmeritradeDATEKConvert.shtml

FAQ MENU

Can the splash screen be turned off?

NOTE: A side effect of not having the splash screen is that QT doesn't load translation tables. So if you need the translation tables do not use this command.

To turn off the splash screen that appears while QuoteTracker is loading. Add the nosplash command line argument to the target box in the shortcut used to start QuoteTracker.

Like this:
"C:\Program Files\Quotetracker\stocks.exe" nosplash

It can be added in addition to other commands like this:
"C:\Program Files\Quotetracker\stocks.exe" nosplash allowdup

In any case, the commands are outside of the quotes and there is a space before each of them.

FAQ MENU

 Minimizing QT, but not charts

Is there any way to minimize the main QuoteTracker window without minimizing the chart windows?

[Note: Although this works on both registered and non-registered versions of QuoteTracker, with the non-registered version the window cannot be resized as small as with the registered version. This is due to the ad pane being open.]

1. Make the main QuoteTracker window as small as possible. (Any open charts will remain on the desktop.)
2. Drag the QuoteTracker window anywhere out of the way. (If you want to drag it to the task bar, uncheck the Taskbar's "Always on top" property first).
3. Click the maximize button to expand the main window for viewing. Click it again when you're done to make it small again.

Select Sub windows "not on top" from the Preferences, Miscellaneous screen if you only need to see the main window. For example; when you need access to the Edit, Portfolio, Alerts or Options menus. This will place the main QuoteTracker window over the charts when you click maximize. If you want your charts visible over the main QuoteTracker window then leave this option unchecked.

FAQ MENU

How to store raw data for future viewing.

The \QuoteTracker\Cache\sdata.dmp file contains all of the raw data within QuoteTracker and it will vary in size based on how many days you're gathering data for, the consolidate setting, the number of stocks you're tracking, your provider, the length of time per day you're getting quotes, the volume of each stock, just to name the obvious ones. If you're looking to save the raw data for just a few stocks then there's two things you can do.

1. If you just want to be able to have a record of the raw data, it can be cut and pasted from a stock's raw data time & sales window. You cannot reload data saved this way back into QuoteTracker, it's for record keeping only. To do this, highlight the desired lines of raw data and click the copy button up top. Go into Notepad, Wordpad, MSWord, or whatever you use for word prcessing and paste the data into a document, then save it to a filename and location of your choosing.

2. If you want the actual raw data file and you want it for just a few stocks, then do the following.

-Close QuoteTracker and make a backup copy of the sdata.dmp file located in the QuoteTracker/Cache folder.
-Start QuoteTracker and clear "All Data" for every stock that you don't want the data saved for.
-Close QuoteTracker and move the sdata.dmp file to your archive/backup folder.
-Copy your original backed up sdata.dmp file back to the QuoteTracker/Cache folder and QuoteTracker will be restored back to where it was.

Using this method will reduce the size of sdata.dmp (along with zipping it) and just maybe you can fit it on a floppy disk. Also, you can rename sdata.dmp to anything you want for archiving purposes, but it must be renamed back to sdata.dmp to load it into QuoteTracker. Another good idea is to install a second instance of QuoteTracker to use for loading the archived sdata.dmp file so that you don't run the risk of overwriting your main sdata.dmp file.

FAQ MENU

How to use the LOG feature in QT.

(New Method)
The lower left corner of the main quotetracker window has a little box with "No Log" in it. Right click that box and make the appropriate selection requested by support.

Note: If you can't see the word "LOG" in the lower left corner you probably don't have your status bar turned on. To turn on the status bar, up in the menus click "View" then "Status Bar". If you click the "View" menu again you should now see a checkmark next to "Status Bar" and the status bar should be at the bottom of the screen.

After the log has been created, right click the box again and select "No Log" to turn logging off. The newly created log file will be in the folder you installed quotetracker into.

Zip and email the stocks.log file to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with a link to the thread you reported the problem in.

(Old Method)
Edit the "target" box in the shortcut you use for starting QT to look something like this:
"C:\program files\quotetracker\stocks.exe" log

Note: There is a space before LOG and LOG is outside of the quotes.

Close QT and restart it using the edited shortcut. QT will now create a file called stocks.log in your QT folder. When the problem happens close QT, then zip and email the stocks.log file to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with a link to the thread you reported the problem in.

Running QuoteTracker with LOG commandline parameter

Our support team may ask you to run QuoteTracker with LOG, LOG99 or LOG100 commandline parameter. The following are instructions for doing so:

1) Right click on the shortcut that you use to start QuoteTracker and select "Properties" from the popup menu.

2) On the Properties screen, select the SHORTCUT tab. The TARGET field will have something like this in it (including the double quotes):

"C:\Program Files\QuoteTracker\STOCKS.EXE"

Change it to be:

"C:\Program Files\QuoteTracker\STOCKS.EXE" LOG

NOTE that LOG is outside the double quotes (if they are there) and preceded by a space.

If instructed to run with LOG99 or LOG100, just add those instead of LOG in the above instructions

The above steps will cause QT to generate a STOCKS.LOG file in the QuoteTracker folder. When emailing the STOCKS.LOG file to support, PLEASE zip it first.

NOTE: Running QuoteTracker with one of the LOG commandline parameters may slow things down to unacceptable levels. Because of this, make sure to remove the LOG parameter after sending us the STOCKS.LOG file unless instructed otherwise.

FAQ MENU

How to revert back to a previous version.

Assuming you selected to backup your old exe file during the upgrade.

1. Go into your QT folder (with QT off) and rename stocks.exe to stkxxxx.exe (the xxxx represents the version number you are backing up).

2. Then rename stkyyyy.exe (the yyyy represents the old version number you want to restore) to stocks.exe.

3. Start QT the way you normally do and you'll be back to the restored older version.

FAQ MENU

How to run two instances of QuoteTracker

Make a copy of the entire QuoteTracker folder, not just the stocks.exe file. (Ex. If your current folder for QT is "c:\program files\quotetracker" make a folder "c:\program files\quotetracker2" (or whatever)). Then copy the entire contents of the "c:\program files\quotetracker" folder (including sub-folders) into the "c:\program files\quotetracker2" folder.

After that, make a shortcut to the stocks.exe file in the new c:\program files\quotetracker2 folder. Your original shortcut should point to "c:\program files\quotetracker\stocks.exe" and the new shortcut should point to "c:\program files\quotetracker2\stocks.exe"

Both of these shortcuts now need the "allowdup" command line argument added to them in the Target box, so that they will look like this:
"c:\program files\quotetracker\stocks.exe" allowdup
"c:\program files\quotetracker2\stocks.exe" allowdup
(Note: allowdup is outside of the quotes and there is a space before it.)

After that final step, you can double click the 2 shortcuts and each will start a separate instance of QT.

FAQ MENU

 Negative volume in raw data.

Negative volume is not an indication of a short sale. QT has no way to determine if a sell transaction was a true sell or a short sale.

The volume that shows up with each quote in the raw data whether it is positive or negative, is sent by your data provider and is not a QT calculation. (QT is simply recording the information it received.) The exception being when you click the "V" button to turn on "Absolute Volume". For this, QT is adding the positive and subtracting the negative volumes from each quote, giving you a running total on the day. (Note: absolute volume is not totaled over multiple days, it starts again each day.)

Now that you know what negative volume is not, back to what it is. As I said, negative volume is sent to QT by your data provider. Which means it's nothing more than a correction being issued. The reasons for this can vary from bogus trades being entered then removed, to incorrectly entered trades such as 10,000 shares instead of 1,000 shares that ends up resulting in a -9,000 share correction.

FAQ MENU

Can I import a list of stocks into QuoteTracker?

You can cut and paste the list of symbols into the watchlist then chose the "make portfolio from watchlist" option or you can add them directly into a portfolio using the Add Symbols window from the right click menu.

This won't help with importing alerts or notes, but at least you won't have to enter all of the symbols manually.

FAQ MENU

Eliminating that "missing" day from showing up.

(Note: I know that with the addition of the holiday feature in QuoteTracker this FAQ is not really necessary. I am leaving it here for those that have chosen not to use the holiday feature.)

1. Go to Options/Edit Preferences menu, click on Charts tab, then on the Multi-day tab.

2. Change time settings to custom. Leave the time stuff same as in the default, but uncheck the box for the "missing" day.

3. Go back to this same screen and check the box for the "missing" day again before the "missing" day comes the following week.

FAQ MENU

Why is my version of QT different?

From within the QuoteTracker program if you click on "Help", "Version Changes" you might find that the latest version listed is older than the version you are running.
http://www.medved.net/quotetracker/verchanges.shtml

This is because the version change list only shows officially released versions of QuoteTracker. Beta versions of QuoteTracker are not listed on this version changes page.

To see the version change list for all beta releases of QuoteTracker that came out after the last official release you will need to go to the beta page.

FAQ MENU

Is there a QuoteTracker for Macs or Linux?

QuoteTracker is a native Windows program and will not work directly in Linux or on Macs. We do not have any plans to add a version for either of those operating systems. You can however run QuoteTracker through Virtual PC on Macs and VMWare on Linux. Quite a few of our users do just that.

FAQ MENU

 Migrating to new Operating System

Here is the cleanest way to do it.
Copy the following files from the QuoteTracker directory to a floppy.

PORT.DAT - Contains all the portfolios for QT versions below 3.2.1G
PORT.XML - Contains all the portfolios for QT versions 3.2.1G and above
ALERTS.DAT - All the stock alerts
CHARTS.INI - All Chart Settings
CHLINES.DAT - Stored trendlines drawn on intraday charts
STOCKS.INI - Contains the WatchList stocks and all the other settings
PAINTBARS.XML - Contains the Chart PaintBar definitions (QT versions 3.5.0D and above)
HOLIDAYS.XML - Contains the holiday definitions so QT will know not to show blank days on charts (QT versions 3.4.1C and above)

After you install the new OS and get your system up and running, download and install QuoteTracker from one of the following links depending on whether or not you want to run the beta or the official release.

http://www.quotetracker.com/download.asp
http://www.quotetracker.com/beta

Copy the backed up files listed above back to your QuoteTracker folder, start QuoteTracker, and then re-enter your registation code to remove the ads. If you already used the registration code 3 times and it gets rejected, all you need to do is contact support at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and request that your account be adjusted.
